Our religion program recognizes that young children possess the gift of faith implanted in them at Baptism and therefore have an innate readiness for the gifts of God. An introduction to the mysteries of faith expressed in the Apostle's Creed is presented to help the children grow in understanding and appreciation of God's love for them. They are helped to see themselves as belonging to the Catholic Commuity and are encouraged to make Catholic beliefs and traditions their own. Catholic practices, sacramental preparation, morals, and values are integrated across the curriculum.
Within the language arts program, the primary department utilizes a phonemic based literature program, which includes grammar, phonics, handwriting, spelling, speaking, comprehension, drama, and writing. A major emphasis is placed on developing writing skills.
The mathematics program is a success-oriented program that allows children of all ability levels to develop a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts of mathematics. Mathematics is taught through drill and practice, the use of manipulatives, problem solving, and games.
Science is taught to the children in the primary grades in an engaging and comprehensible format with an emplasis in the life, earth and physical sciences. The children are encouraged to satisfy their natural curiosity by exploring the environment, animals, and life around them. DASH (Developmental Approach to Science and Health) is also used to reinforce scientific concepts.
The social studies curriculum builds consistent cumulative learning. Our program allows students in the primary grades to acquire and develop skills related to people and places in a diverse and changing world.
