At John F. Kennedy Catholic School, we’re reimagining how we track learning and celebrate student growth in preschool and kindergarten. Instead of traditional report cards filled with confusing jargon, we’re introducing the Diocese of Pittsburgh Preschool and Kindergarten Badging Program as a transparent, child-centered, and joyful way to track progress. Badging is just one of the many reasons why JFK is an excellent choice for your child’s education!
What Is Educational Badging?
Think of earning a badge like earning patches in Scouts but for what a child is learning at school. Badges are earned when a student consistently demonstrates mastery of a skill. Each badge represents effort, persistence, and growth and every achievement is celebrated by the whole class!
Children receive badges for achieving specific learning milestones, such as:
Every child receives their own Badge Book, which includes stickers for each skill or learning standard.
When a child earns a badge:
The class celebrates their accomplishment.
Parents are notified of their child’s achievement.
The book becomes a living portfolio of learning, kept in the classroom throughout the year.
Why Badging Matters
Supports Early Growth
Builds excitement and motivation for learning from day one.
Encourages Goal Setting
Children can see what they’ve achieved and look forward to what’s next.
Celebrates the Whole Child
Badges highlight not just academics, but also faith, kindness, and social skill.
A Whole-Child Approach
The badging program was developed by preschool and kindergarten teachers throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Inspired by their deep commitment to their students learning–they designed a system that reflects real classroom learning and the mission of Catholic education. Badging complements traditional assessments.
Teachers also use badging for:
Classroom observations during play and learning,
Nationally normed tools like FastBridge (reading & math) and
Faith formation and social-emotional benchmarks.
Badging:
Makes learning clear and easy to understand.
Shows families exactly what skills their child has mastered.
Encourages ongoing collaboration between home and school.
Families receive Badge Progress Sheets four times a year, offering a clear, encouraging look at their child’s growth.
